The power of scents
Share
¿Did you know that our brain can detect up to 10,000 different scents, compared to other sensory experiences such as taste and touch?
When we smell something, this scent travels directly to the part of the brain that stores emotions and long-term memories, and that is where more than 40 million receptor neurons specifically dedicated to storing these scents lie.
That is why, scents have always been part of our life, and knowledge is required to create harmonious mixtures from hundreds of potential aromatic chemicals, both natural and synthetic, to create an unforgettable fragrance.
Experts in the field (perfumers), bring this art to life through the creation of a fragrance with an emotional tone that mixes with the chemistry of the individual, which gives personal or sentimental value to said fragrance.
This art involves creating in these mixtures, three levels of fragrance notes; which include: top notes, middle or "heart" notes, and base notes.
These are used both in the fragrances that we use on our skin, and those that we find in scented candles.
Top notes tend to be light and dissipate quickly while the middle and bottom notes of a fragrance are deeper scents and are typically woody.
It is for this scientific reason that scents have the power to create changes in our mentality and behavior, triggering moods and feelings.
This allows us to use scents as a therapeutic tool in times of stress, anxiety or depression; it even helps us relive positive memories linked to people and places from the past.
Commonly, we use scented candles during meditation or relaxation activities, when in fact they are useful for any time of the day according to the environment we want to achieve.
We believe that this is precisely the reason why, during a pandemic, scented candles are a great ally to improve our mental health and start a process of connecting with ourselves. Since social distancing has deprived us of precisely these connections with the outside world, showing that our interior also needed attention.
However, our brain acclimates quickly to scents (15 minutes top), so a single candle will only go so far.
Our recommendation is that you have different scents in different spaces. In order to create emotional atmospheres and transport yourself to different places when you need it.
So you can go collecting different scents that have a personal meaning, encourage you or evoke happy memories.
We hope that now you can see the true power behind scented candles and let us know in which spaces you use your candles and at what time of the day you light them.
